About Credit Human
Our history
It all started on March 7, 1935, when twelve federal government workers pooled their money to form the National Federation of Federal Employees Local No. 28. One of the first credit unions in San Antonio, the original members received 37 loans that year. By 1949, the credit union had grown and changed its name to Government Employees Credit Union (GECU).
In 1987, GECU officially changed its name to San Antonio Credit Union (SACU) to better reflect a diverse member base. The credit union was federally chartered in 1989, enabling us to further grow and serve members outside Texas.
In 2016, San Antonio Federal Credit Union became Credit Human, a name that reflects our values—belief in others, giving credit to the dreams of our members and being more human by treating each other with the respect all of us deserve. The Credit Human name extends that belief to every member we serve, no matter where they live or where they do business.
How we’re structured
Member-owned and not-for-profit
Credit Human is a financial cooperative that balances the needs of responsible savers and borrowers. Our focus is on the financial health of our members, not obtaining profits that benefit shareholders.
Governed by a member-elected board
Our board is comprised of and elected by members, ensuring your voice is represented. As volunteers, they work together to uphold the mission of our credit union. We believe in transparency and encourage all our members to attend our annual meeting.
Guided by long-term member benefit
Our members trust us to care for their money with purpose. That trust allows us to offer thoughtful rates and services that support long-term financial health and move us closer to a future with less financial stress.
What guides our decisions
Our mission and values shape how we make decisions and how we design products and services. Above all, they remind us to put people first as we grow, adapt and remain focused on what matters most: doing better for the people and communities we serve.
Financial
We support people through responsible products, services and guidance that reduce financial stress.
Community
We invest in small businesses and nonprofits whose work aligns with our vision—communities free from stress.
Environmental
We work to reduce environmental impact for a healthier planet for current and future generations.
What our employees say
We care about your financial health and we strive to serve our members well.
“Since joining Credit Human, I have grown both professionally and personally. Working at an organization that aligns with my values has only deepened my passion for helping others build strong financial foundations.”
“Credit Human made a difference in my family’s financial health by looking at my current situation and identifying small changes I could make to change my trajectory. I have to take the action to make the change, but I know I have real human beings that care about my financial health and will treat me with respect and dignity along the way.”
“Managing financial wellness products, like credit monitoring, budget and spending analysis, has transformed how I view financial wellbeing. In my role as Digital Services Product Manager, I take pride in offering solutions that truly make a difference in members' lives, helping them navigate their financial journey with clarity and dignity.”

We are active in our communities
Your community is unique—so are we.
Unlike most institutions that base their decisions on the profitability of a location and follow a one-size-fits-all approach to financial services, we seek to understand the unique needs of each community we serve. Each Financial Health Center is tailored for the community it serves and we are very proud of that.
A space for community organizations
It can be difficult for non-profits and community organizations to find a place to meet, so we offer space in many of our locations. Connect with your local Financial Health Center for more details.
We designed our headquarters building at 1703 Broadway in San Antonio, Texas with a community room. This meeting space houses 12 people comfortably and is available by reservation.
Our relationship with local resources
Each of our Member Relationship Specialists has developed relationships with local organizations and aid resources so they can connect our members with real help close to home for things like utility, rental, food, clothing and legal assistance. We know your financial situation is only one part of your overall wellbeing and it is influenced by your whole life experience.
