How to tackle saving

There are two things we focus on when thinking about saving: building liquid savings and saving for the long term.

Liquid Savings

Liquid savings—money you can access quickly and easily without penalties—help you stay steady when unexpected expenses come up, and funds can be rebuilt over time. Start with a goal that feels right for your monthly expenses and financial slack, then build toward about three months of expenses by making saving a regular part of your plan, like paying yourself first through direct deposit.

Saving for long-term goals

Saving for long-term goals like retirement, a home or travel helps secure your financial future by clarifying how much you need and what you can save now. Then determine if there are ways to supplement your savings. Checking with your employer to see what they offer for retirement is a good place to start.
